The Seagull salad is a classic Soviet salad made from available ingredients, which to this day is often found on the menus of snack bars, bars and cafes, as well as on the home menus of those lucky people who still have quality cookbooks of that time.
The classic "Chaika" salad assumes the presence of three basic components: cheese, canned green peas and boiled eggs, for example, onions, but in small quantities. Non-classic salad options may also contain cucumbers (fresh or canned), a clove of garlic instead of onions, pickled onions instead of fresh, melted cheese instead of hard cheese.
As you can see, the salad is mostly made up of ready-to-eat foods and therefore cooks quickly. It is more unpretentious than the famous "Olivier" and "Herring under a fur coat", and is more focused on the everyday menu, but attractive in its simplicity and turns out to be very tender and appetizingly creamy cheese. Such a simple and quick-to-prepare salad helps a lot both on weekdays and on long holiday weekends, since it brings a pleasant variety to the menu, but at the same time it is prepared from those products that are often already in the refrigerator. Try it!
You will need these ingredients for cooking.
Grate the cheese or cut into small cubes. If you plan to garnish the salad a bit before serving, immediately set aside a few generous pinches of grated cheese (30-40g) for later garnish.
Peel and finely chop the boiled eggs and onions if using. Onions are optional in the salad, but add a spicy flavor to the flavor. For cooking, it is best to use green onions or salad-type onions with a mild taste. And if only onions were at hand, then before adding to the salad, it must be doused with boiling water in order to soften its severity.
Drain the liquid from the canned peas, place the peas on a sieve, rinse with running water and strain thoroughly.
Place all prepared ingredients in a salad bowl and stir.
Add mayonnaise to taste.
Try the salad and, if necessary, add a little salt and ground black pepper to taste.
For serving portions, use a serving ring (or wide, straight-sided glass) to shape the salad and place the salad onto a plate.
Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese over the salad and carefully remove the pan.
Garnish with a sprig of fresh herbs if desired and serve.
The classic "Seagull" salad with cheese is ready. Enjoy your meal!
