We know this salad with cottage cheese and tomatoes from my mother's friend, an Armenian. But her family was not originally from Armenia, but from Turkey - they managed to escape just when the extermination of their people began, and the path of fate brought these people to Russia, relatively far to the north. They have relatives in Armenia, but the branch of the family with which we are familiar, in fact, did not live in that country. With this in mind, I really do not know what national cuisine this salad belongs to (in modern Armenian there is no such dish, I asked)!
It's a strange thing - only one ingredient is different than in the tomato salad with sour cream we are used to since childhood, but according to our perception, it was a new dish for us! Perhaps his secret was the huge amount of black pepper, uncharacteristic for Russian cuisine. But in our family, Aunt Mona's recipe has taken root precisely in such a conservative and concise form in which she herself showed it to us. We did not add or subtract anything. It has no greens, no garlic, but it is delicious without them, believe me!
There are very few ingredients in the recipe for a salad with cottage cheese and tomatoes; in the season it is cheap, elementary in preparation and suitable for any time of the day and for any meal (well, except for lean and vegan ones, of course). It can be served for breakfast, with meat, and with boiled potatoes … But it is not a shame to put it on the festive table! In general, despite its simplicity, I would like to acquaint you with this recipe: maybe it will become just as useful a little culinary discovery for you as it is for us.
Cut the tomatoes into large slices.
Sprinkle them with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Be sure to freshly ground, and there should be a lot of it. By the way, this salad was the first time in my life when I saw a real manual pepper grinder, and how it is ground from the grains! You will laugh, but until that moment I had no idea that black peas and black powder that my mother uses are, in principle, one and the same … In my child's brain, these were two different seasonings.
Well, now all that remains is to mix everything with cottage cheese! And the salad with cottage cheese and tomatoes is already ready !!!
