I really love these dishes: hot, thick, nutritious, moderately oily. With good sour cream (or without it), and with a crouton of black bread with some kind of spread - it's very tasty, satisfying, home-like, cozy and warm. As for me, these are some of the ideal everyday dishes that can be prepared, if not every day, but several times a week for sure.

In this case, I changed my habit and took onions instead of asafetida.
Heat butter and oil at the bottom of a saucepan. Add the diced peeled onions. Fry it lightly until translucent.
Add potatoes, diced in small pieces, and carrots, also diced.
Sprinkle vegetables with flour and fry for 2-3 minutes over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Then add the washed lentils.
Pour hot water over the food, add spices and salt. After boiling, cook under the lid on very low heat for 20-25 minutes.
Whisk the contents of the pot with a blender.
Pour in milk. Stir. Put it back on fire.
As soon as the red lentil soup with milk is close to boiling, remove from heat and go straight to the table. The dish is tastier when freshly prepared.
