Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef 80/20 recommended
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 8 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup dill pickle slices
  • 12 count Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 1/4 cup salted butter melted
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Equipment

  • 1 9x13 inch baking dish
  • 1 Large Skillet

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Without separating the rolls, slice the slab of Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half in a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef and diced onion over medium-high heat until beef is browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
  4. Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the bottom buns. Top with cheddar cheese slices, then with dill pickle slices.
  5. Place the top half of the rolls on top.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, Dijon mustard, and onion powder. Brush the mixture over the tops of the rolls. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes to toast the tops.
  8. Let cool slightly before cutting and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding a layer of crispy, crumbled bacon on top of the cheese before baking.
To prevent soggy bottoms, you can lightly toast the bottom buns for 2-3 minutes before adding the beef mixture.
