Ingredients

  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Cocoa Powder Good quality for best flavor
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt Just a pinch

Equipment

  • 1 Small saucepan
  • 1 Whisk
  • 1 Glass Jar or Squeeze Bottle For storage

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and salt until well combined.
  2. Pour in the water and whisk until smooth. Place the pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Let the syrup cool completely to room temperature. It will thicken as it cools. Transfer to a jar or bottle and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

Notes

For an extra rich syrup, use brewed coffee instead of water.
The syrup will thicken significantly in the fridge. Warm it for 10-15 seconds in the microwave to make it pourable again.
